What if God was one of us?

The Most Important Question

This is the most important question when it comes to religion and faith.

That God would or could become one of us is one of the most — if not the most — inspiring idea that religion, specifically Christianity, offers us.

Often we think God is distant and aloof, controlling things from behind a giant cosmic desk, unaware of what is happening to us. We think God is all-powerful, directing the cosmos out there somewhere, oblivious to who we are and what we are going through.

But what each of us really wants is to know is that someone sees what we are going through, hears the pain in our hearts, and understands our fears and our hopes.

If God was never one of us then how could God really know, hear, and understand us. God would just be outside looking in.

Can we really trust a God would isn’t as vulnerable, and weak, and unstable as us? Could we really believe in a God who didn’t understand the human condition?

But for Christians, during Christmas specifically we celebrate that God was one of us.

Just like us…

God is just like us human beings.

  • God was born of Mary.
  • God grew up and went on family vacations.
  • God had a regular day job as a carpenter.
  • God had friends and family — who sometimes misunderstood him.
  • God was tempted to sin and take advantage of people.
  • God was falsely accused and executed by corrupt leaders.
  • God died.

Of course Christians believe Jesus was also raised from the dead (but that’s for a different post).

All the hopes and fears that we all struggle with we can know that God has also experienced. And we know this because God really was one of us.
